For my self portrait project I received my inspiration from one of the photographers we reviewed in class. My photographer is Edward Honaker. Edward Honaker was a creative man that struggled with anxiety and depression. His work really caught my attention because it is something I can relate to on a personal level. Almost all of his photos are black and white, which creates even more of a sense of that dark side known as depression.
This Is one of his photos that stood out to me the most. This self portrait is one I can relate to on a personal note. In this three series photo it shows him falling, drowning, and laying flat on the bed. When I look at these photos I can see and feel his pain. Most of the time people who suffer with depression say they always feeling like they are free falling or drowning. The series photos really bring out what he is feeling, which is depression and anxiety. Along with the feeling and emotions behind these photos, I contemplate how he actually created them. Especially the water and falling photos. I wonder how he caught the perfect frame from being underwater and falling through the air. It is completely incredible.
One of my other favorite shots that he took of himself was the one below this. When I look at this photo I can see and feel a separation between the dark underworld of suffering and the heavens above. In this photo series of two we see at the bottom a self portrait of him seemingly about to commit suicide. At the top we see balloons flying away in the sky which to me I get from it flying away to the heavens. Although the photo series is dark, I almost get a sense of relief as well. For someone who has also felt in ways as Edward has, I can understand what he feels and all the emotion that comes out from these photos.
For my self-portrait photos I took upon my inspiration from Edward Honaker.
